Desire Leads. The Unknown Follows.

Three iconic operas. Three kinds of wanting.

Opera Baltimore's 2026–2027 season is about desire and its consequences. Three operas, three different kinds of wanting. In each one, someone chases something they know might destroy them—a person, power, a life that feels possible for one moment. What makes these stories urgent is that desire does not announce itself as dangerous. It feels like the right choice until it isn't.

This season explores what happens when desire wins and when it loses. When the stakes are love. When they are survival. When you watch these three stories unfold, you will see the full weight of what wanting can do to a person: how it drives them forward, how it blinds them, how it breaks them. That is what Opera Baltimore is asking you to sit with this year.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni

A charming disaster of a man. A trail of people he has burned. A night when the consequences finally walk through the door.

Don Giovanni is the guy who treats every room like it belongs to him. He flirts, he lies, he takes what he wants, and he keeps moving before anyone can hold him accountable. His friend tries to clean up the mess. The people he has hurt are done being polite. The tension builds like a group text that has been simmering for months and finally turns into a public blowup.

Then the story makes a hard turn into the supernatural. Don Giovanni gets a warning. He laughs it off. He thinks he is untouchable. Mozart’s music makes the whole thing feel fast, sharp, and dangerously fun until it is suddenly not fun at all.

If you like stories where charisma is a weapon and the ending refuses to let the villain slip away, start here.

Verdi’s Macbeth

A prophecy. A power grab. A couple who cannot stop once they start.

Macbeth is what happens when ambition stops being a private thought and becomes a plan. Macbeth hears a prediction that he could be king. He tells his wife. She hears it and goes all in. Together, they push past the line they swore they would never cross, and then they keep crossing new ones because backing down would mean admitting what they have done.

This is not “history” in a dusty way. It is a pressure-cooker story about fear, image, and the way power makes people paranoid. The supernatural is everywhere, like a bad idea you cannot shake. Verdi’s score hits hard and moves fast. You will feel the momentum, the dread, and the unraveling.

If you have ever watched someone chase status until it hollowed them out, you already understand Macbeth.

Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas

A love story with no easy exit. A leader forced to choose between her heart and her survival.

Dido is a queen trying to hold a world together. Aeneas arrives and love shows up like a surprise you did not plan for. For a moment, it feels possible: a future, a partnership, a life that is not all duty. Then outside forces step in and twist the story. A message arrives. Aeneas believes it. He leaves. Dido is left with the kind of heartbreak that is also political, public, and final.

This opera is short, direct, and devastating. It does not waste your time. It goes straight to the nerve. Purcell’s music is gorgeous in a way that hurts, and the ending lands like a door closing.
