Overview
Music by Giuseppe Verdi
Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, with additions by Andrea Maffei
Based on the play by William Shakespeare
Macbeth has spent his life inside a world where violence is rewarded, as long as the right people call it service.
He is a soldier, a husband, and a man close enough to power to start wondering why it belongs to someone else. Then a prophecy gives shape to the thought he has not dared to say aloud. King. The word lands, and the future stops feeling distant.
Lady Macbeth hears it too. She knows what her husband wants, and she knows where he will falter. Together, they make one choice they cannot unmake. Then another. Then another. The crown comes closer, but peace moves farther away.
Verdi’s Macbeth does not treat ambition like a grand idea. It treats ambition like a fever. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth get what they reach for, then discover that power is not the same thing as safety. The kingdom does not become theirs. It becomes a place where every sound might be accusation, every friend might be a threat, and sleep becomes the first thing they lose for good.
Opera Baltimore brings Macbeth to the Engineers Club in concert opera format with piano accompaniment.
