Overview
Music by Henry Purcell
Libretto by Nahum Tate
Dido has already built a life before Aeneas arrives.
She is not waiting to be rescued, discovered, or made interesting by love. She is the Queen of Carthage, a woman who has survived loss, claimed power, and made a city around herself. Then Aeneas enters with his own wounds, his own promises, and a destiny that was written before she ever met him.
That is the cruelty at the center of Dido and Aeneas. Aeneas may love her. He may even mean what he says. But the world has given him a future that requires leaving, and it has given Dido the bill.
Purcell’s opera is brief because it does not need more time. Love arrives. Pressure gathers. A man chooses the road with his name on it. A woman is left to turn heartbreak into one of the most devastating laments ever written.
Nothing about this piece feels padded or ornamental. The music moves with terrible clarity, and Dido’s final scene has held audiences for centuries because it refuses to over-explain grief. It lets the voice do the work.
Opera Baltimore closes the 2026–2027 season with Dido and Aeneas in concert opera format with piano accompaniment at the Engineers Club. The scale is compact. The damage is not.
