Important Information for May 2 Patrons

Flower Mart Road Closures

If you're attending Albert Herring on Friday, May 2, please plan ahead! That evening overlaps with Baltimore’s beloved Flower Mart, and several roads in Mount Vernon will be closed to traffic, with festivities happening just outside the Engineers Club.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Mount Vernon Place will be closed to vehicle traffic all day and overnight.

  • Flower Mart music ends at 7:00pm, but the area will still be busy as patrons arrive for our 7:30pm curtain.

We expect limited parking and heavier pedestrian activity in the area.

  • Please allow extra time to arrive and consider using rideshare services, carpooling, or public transit.

  • The accessible entrance via the alley behind the Engineer’s Club remains open, as does the main entrance. The back/accessible entrance will be accessible from Cathedral Street, but vehicles will need to return the way they came and exit onto Cathedral Street; no access is possible on Charles Street.

While street parking is available in Mount Vernon, it's likely to be limited or fill up quickly during Flower Mart weekend. Luckily, there are several garages nearby:

  • The 520 N. Charles St. Lot

  • The 225 N. Calvert St. Garage

  • The 209 E. Monument St. Garage

  • The 600 Cathedral St. Lot

Opera Baltimore staff will be on-site at the Engineers Club to assist and direct patrons once they arrive to the venue. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to welcoming you to Albert Herring.

Welcome to Loxford:
A Comic Opera Adventure!

Composer: Benjamin Britten
Librettist: Eric Crozier

In the quaint town of Loxford, East Sussex, Lady Billows is on a mission. She’s gathered the town's most important folks to find the perfect Queen for their May Day Feast. But there’s a problem: none of the young women meet her high moral standards. Just when all hope seems lost, someone suggests Albert Herring, the shy and obedient greengrocer’s son, as the ideal candidate.

To everyone’s surprise, Albert is crowned King of the May. What follows is a hilarious and unexpected turn of events as Albert, tired of living under his mother’s strict rules, embarks on a wild night of adventure and self-discovery.

Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring is his only true comic opera, filled with witty music and a delightful story. It explores themes of innocence, social class, and growing up, all set to a brilliantly clever score.

Perfect for first-time opera-goers, this charming tale will have you laughing and rooting for Albert as he breaks free and finds his own way. Join us for a night of fun and unforgettable singing!
